Schindlers Digital Assets (SDA) has introduced a pioneering transactional framework in collaboration with Goldbits, allowing Krugerrand gold coin holders to engage in real estate transactions in South Africa. This framework, now available on the SchindlersX.io platform, facilitates the use of Krugerrands as a source of value in property purchases. By converting these gold coins into Rand-denominated settlements within a regulated structure, property transactions can be processed through standard conveyancing channels, with sellers receiving payment in Rands.
The move comes at a time when global gold prices are experiencing a significant rally, with gold rising over 30% in the past year and exceeding $2,400 per ounce. This surge is driven by investor concerns over geopolitical instability, inflation, and volatility in traditional financial markets, prompting renewed interest in practical applications for physical gold holdings. CEO of SDA, Candice Dawkshas, highlighted that the new framework offers a compliant pathway for integrating gold into the real economy, such as property transactions, simplifying a process that was previously complex.
Traditionally, property transactions have required payments through formal banking and conveyancing systems, which have not connected with physical gold, despite its status as a trusted store of value. The framework developed by SDA and Goldbits addresses this disconnect by managing conversion and compliance on behalf of the buyer while maintaining standard procedures for sellers and conveyancers. Tjaart le Roux, Managing Director of SA Gold Bits, emphasized that this approach enables physical bullion like Krugerrands, recognized as legal tender in South Africa, to participate more directly in economic activities within a structured framework.
Since its introduction in 1967, the Krugerrand has become one of the world’s most widely traded gold bullion coins. The World Gold Council reports that global retail investment demand for gold coins and bars reached 1,190 tonnes in 2024, underscoring the strong demand for physical gold ownership. The SchindlersX.io platform aims to bridge the gap between alternative asset holders and real-world transactions, with the Krugerrand-to-property framework being its inaugural offering. The platform is set to expand with additional asset classes in the future.
