Nigeria has successfully wrapped up a government-assisted operation to repatriate citizens from South Africa, finalizing the evacuation of 1,490 Nigerians over a span of five weeks. This initiative, which took place between June 10 and July 15, was prompted by increasing tensions and anti-immigrant demonstrations targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.
The repatriation effort was part of a broader response to these hostilities, with similar actions undertaken by several other African nations, including Uganda, Ghana, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Kenya. These countries also moved to bring their citizens back from South Africa amid the unrest.
Although Nigeria has concluded its planned evacuation programme, the government continues to express concern over the treatment and safety of foreign nationals residing in South Africa. The Nigerian authorities have reiterated their strong stance against xenophobia and are committed to addressing these concerns through diplomatic channels.
This initiative highlights Nigeria’s proactive approach in ensuring the well-being of its citizens abroad during times of crisis. Despite the conclusion of the evacuation, Nigeria remains vigilant and dedicated to fostering a safer environment for its nationals in South Africa through ongoing diplomatic efforts.
