Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has pledged to raise South Africa’s SASSA old-age grant to R4,500 per month if his party assumes power. During the EFF’s provincial manifesto launch in North West, Malema outlined plans for an EFF-led government to enhance social grants and offer stronger financial support to the nation’s pensioners.
Malema criticized the ruling African National Congress (ANC) for providing insufficient support to the elderly, emphasizing that pensioners have contributed significantly to the country’s development through taxes during their working years. Currently, the old-age grant is set at R2,400 monthly, with a slightly higher amount of R2,420 for those over 75. Additionally, Malema took aim at the R370 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, deeming it inadequate, and advocated for a new financial aid program specifically for unemployed graduates.
Further reinforcing his stance, Malema reiterated the R4,500 proposal while addressing a gathering in Mpumalanga. He highlighted the financial burden many pensioners face, as they often provide for their children and grandchildren. Malema argued that the government could accommodate the proposed increase by improving the efficiency of public fund utilization.
With local government elections scheduled for November 4, issues surrounding social grants, unemployment, and the escalating cost of living are likely to be pivotal topics for political parties as they campaign. Malema’s promises aim to resonate with voters who are concerned about the current economic challenges faced by South Africa’s elderly population.
