Yemeni Houthis Launch Assault on Saudi Base Amid Intensifying Conflict

The Iran-aligned Houthi fighters have claimed responsibility for a recent drone and missile assault on a military base in southern Saudi Arabia, intensifying the conflict between the Houthis and the Yemeni government-backed forces. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree stated that the attack targeted weapons storage and command-and-control centers at the Sharurah military base. Saudi officials reported that a projectile landed close to the Yemeni border, injuring two individuals and damaging a mosque and several other structures. Additionally, air-raid sirens were activated in the vicinity.

This incident follows a significant Houthi offensive along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, where they have seized strategically vital areas, including a crucial port city and territories near the Bab al-Mandab Strait. This strait is a key passageway for international shipping. In response, Yemeni government forces have initiated counterattacks aimed at Houthi positions in the southwestern regions of the country. Government officials indicated that their forces are regrouping and planning a return to the Red Sea coast following previous setbacks.

The resurgence in fighting has reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 500 people and displaced tens of thousands. According to the United Nations, nearly 86,000 individuals have fled their homes in Yemen, most of whom have been displaced since early September. This latest escalation is impacting regional security and energy routes, with the Bab al-Mandab Strait’s significance growing for Saudi oil exports due to shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz amid the broader conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.

Saudi Arabia continues to support Yemen’s internationally recognized government, while the Houthis remain aligned with Iran. The renewed hostilities have raised concerns about potential further attacks on critical infrastructure and commercial shipping in the region. The situation remains tense as both sides engage in ongoing military operations, highlighting the urgent need for diplomatic solutions to prevent further destabilization.
