Increased Competition for Springboks as Erasmus Evaluates Squad After Australia Loss

South Africa’s recent 42-38 loss to Australia in Perth has intensified the competition for spots in the Springboks team as head coach Rassie Erasmus evaluates his squad in preparation for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The match saw Erasmus make 13 changes to the starting lineup, providing players with opportunities to secure their places for future selections. However, the outcome highlighted defensive weaknesses and areas for improvement, potentially influencing upcoming team decisions.

Fullback Aphelele Fassi found himself under pressure during the game, particularly struggling with high balls, one of which led to a try by Australian centre Len Ikitau. Although Fassi assisted in Edwill van der Merwe’s first-half try, he faces stiff competition for his position from established players like Damian Willemse and other back-three contenders.

Scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies, who had limited Test appearances this season, was brought in to make an impact but was substituted after 48 minutes. Morne van den Berg, coming off the bench, made a notable contribution, adding to the competition from Grant Williams and Cobus Reinach as the Springboks consider their options at scrumhalf.

Veteran flyhalf Handre Pollard remains a valuable asset given his significant role in South Africa’s 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cup victories. Despite successfully kicking his goals against Australia, Pollard could not prevent the Wallabies from gaining a substantial lead. With the emergence of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and the presence of Manie Libbok, Pollard’s position is under review as Erasmus looks to balance experience with upcoming talent.

Marco van Staden, a loose forward, also faces a challenging path to securing his place in the back row. Known for his experience and breakdown skills, van Staden competes with seasoned players like Pieter-Steph du Toit, Siya Kolisi, and Kwagga Smith, along with emerging talents such as Cameron Hanekom and Ben-Jason Dixon. As Erasmus continues to experiment with his back-row combinations, van Staden will need to capitalize on future opportunities to solidify his role.
