Sri Lanka achieved a historic victory over England in a One Day International (ODI) match on Thursday, successfully chasing down a massive target to secure a thrilling two-wicket win. Chasing England’s formidable total of 429-4, Sri Lanka reached 430-8, marking the second-highest successful run chase in ODI cricket history.

England’s captain, Harry Brook, delivered a sensational performance, scoring 202 off just 116 balls and becoming the first England batter to achieve a double century in men’s ODI cricket. Despite this record-breaking effort, England suffered their second consecutive defeat in the tri-series.

Sri Lanka’s innings was bolstered by a 166-run partnership between Avishka Fernando, who scored 97, and Pavan Rathnayake, who contributed 130 off 106 balls. Captain Dasun Shanaka added a rapid 97 from 50 deliveries to keep Sri Lanka in the chase. Janith Liyanage played a pivotal role at the end, remaining unbeaten on 61 from 27 balls. With six runs needed from the final two balls, Liyanage sealed the victory with a six over long-off.

Meanwhile, in Test cricket, South Africa defeated Australia by an innings and 31 runs in the second Test at St George’s Park in Gqeberha. The victory came despite rain delays on the final day, as South Africa bowled out Australia for 295 in their second innings.

This win allowed South Africa to level the series at 1-1 after Australia had taken the opening Test in Durban by 214 runs. The result sets the stage for a decisive third Test in Cape Town, with both teams seeking a series victory and valuable points in the World Test Championship.
