In a bid to reshape security dynamics in the Middle East, Chinese President Xi Jinping has advocated for a new framework centered around cooperation, dialogue, and respect for national sovereignty. His proposal came during discussions with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo, where he outlined a comprehensive four-point strategy. This strategy emphasizes enhancing regional security collaboration, addressing interconnected conflicts, supporting economic development, and bolstering international coordination.
President Xi emphasized the importance of regional countries taking greater responsibility for their security, opposing interference from external powers. He highlighted the Palestinian issue as a central component in resolving broader tensions across the Middle East. Furthermore, China expressed its readiness to work with countries in the region to safeguard international shipping routes, promote economic growth, and tackle the root causes of conflicts. Xi underscored the necessity of adhering to the United Nations Charter and international law as the basis for addressing regional challenges.
The discussions also placed significant emphasis on strengthening economic ties between China and Egypt. President Xi urged enhanced collaboration in sectors such as infrastructure, energy, agriculture, communications, electric vehicles, green energy, aerospace, and the digital economy. China has maintained its position as Egypt’s largest trading partner and main source of imports for 14 consecutive years, with bilateral trade increasing from $10.21 billion in 2013 to $20.79 billion in 2025.
During the talks, the two nations signed over 20 cooperation agreements spanning areas like artificial intelligence, trade, technology, education, transportation, and industrial supply chains. They also released a joint statement aimed at further solidifying their comprehensive strategic partnership. This move highlights the growing economic interdependence between China and Egypt and the potential for future collaborations in various sectors.
