Nigeria has confirmed its first Ebola case in the capital city, Abuja, after a woman who had traveled through Uganda tested positive for the virus. This has prompted health authorities to initiate contact tracing efforts and enhance disease surveillance to prevent further transmission.

According to Nigeria’s health ministry, the patient began exhibiting symptoms on October 7 and was admitted to a hospital in Abuja four days later, where she was diagnosed with Ebola. The health ministry has not disclosed her nationality or the exact date of her arrival in Nigeria.

Health Minister Muhammad Pate stated that officials have identified 44 individuals who may have been in contact with the patient. Efforts to trace these contacts and implement containment measures are ongoing to mitigate the risk of additional cases.

The outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has been reported in several African countries, including Kenya, has raised regional health concerns. In response, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has ramped up surveillance activities, emphasizing early detection, laboratory testing, patient isolation, and infection prevention measures. The country had previously established an Ebola task force following an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo earlier this year.

Ugandan health officials noted that the woman had traveled to the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo for business and only transited through Uganda. They highlighted that her transit does not confirm the location of her exposure to the virus, which remains under investigation.

Africa’s public health authorities have warned of the serious risks posed by the Ebola outbreak, given its spread across multiple regions. The Bundibugyo strain can cause severe illness and is potentially fatal. Health officials are focusing on rapid identification of infections, monitoring exposed individuals, and implementing coordinated public health strategies to prevent further spread.

Nigeria’s response will prioritize containing the confirmed case, conducting thorough contact tracing, and bolstering preparedness efforts as investigations into the source of the infection continue.
